BEFORE THE SAFARI

Travel Kit
An essential part of your trip is to have the proper clothing and trip essentials. To ensure you have the best time of you life, click on "What to bring" in order to make sure you are geared up for your safari.

Adequate travel insurance
Make sure that you have adequate travel and medical insurance. Comprehensive travel insurance options are available from Destination Africa Tours.

Passports & Visas
All visitors are responsible for ensuring that passports, visas and re-entry permits are in order. South Africa and British passport holders do not need visas to enter Botswana, but passports should be valid for 6 months after the intended date of return. Visitors holding other passports please check with us or the Botswana Consulate.

Clothing
Cool, comfortable, easy to wash, casual clothing is best suited. Natural fibers, such as cotton are most comfortable. Neutral colours are more suitable on safari, white is not practical. Warm clothes, for early morning game drives and sitting around the campfire in the evening. Comfortable walking shoes and a large brimmed hat are also a must. If you enjoy a swim then remember to bring along your swimming wear as many of the lodges have pools. Army camouflage uniforms or hats are forbidden so please leave these at home.

Malaria
There is a risk of malaria in Botswana and you are advised to consult your doctor or travel clinic for the most effective anti-malarial prophylaxis.

Video Camera
If you bring a video camera, it is essential to bring a 12-volt charger so the batteries can be charged off the vehicle in remote areas. Electricity is only available in the towns and the lodges, not in the National Parks or Reserves.

Camera, Lenses & Film
Botswana gives the amateur photographer using a point and shoot camera and the professional photographer the opportunity to enjoy them and to take great memories home. For bird photography a fast auto-focus camera will be very helpful. For scenic photos, something simple is fine. Make sure you know how your equipment works and which lenses is best to use. Remember the wider the lens opening, the less the depth of field - this makes wide apertures perfect for isolating animals from their backgrounds. For a scenic shots a wide-angle lens such as a 24mm is great. For large mammals and groups of smaller animals a mid-range zoom lens is perfect. A 400mm or 500mm lens is ideal for photographing birds and distance animals.

ASA 100 is ideal for taking pictures in bright light and with vibrant colours, its exceptional for enlargements. The ASA 200 film is good for taking photographs in relatively little light, rich and vibrant colours and gives you maximum versatility on fast action and still life's. The ASA 400 is best for low light and great for fast action. There are numerous classic photo opportunities, birdlife, scenic photos, animals and beautiful sunsets. If you can, and if you are a serious photographer, we recommend that you take a small, portable tri-pod with you.

Snacks
Although all meals and snacks are supplied, you are more then welcome to bring along whatever you prefer.

Alcoholic beverages
Soft drinks, beer and South African estate wine are included in your safari. Spirits and liqueurs are not included, but we'll cater for you, if you inform us before hand (these drinks will be at extra cost) leaving you to enjoy your favorite drinks around the campfire in Africa.
